Selena looked up at him while he asked about scars when one became a vampire. Her index finger on her right hand automatically flew up to a spot on her neck. She looked away from them, a flame of hatred erupting in her for a moment. She gritted her teeth and looked at the ground before taking a deep breath. Her eyes flew back to his face and she didn't bother trying to smile. Everything goes away, except one scar. And that scar is the spot where you were bit. For example,
She lifted her hair away from her neck so he could see she crescent moon-shaped scar on her neck. That's where I was bitten. Selena hoped he wouldn't ask about her reaction to his question. She didn't mind telling him at all, she just hated the memories that came with it. Even after a thousand years, she still remembered that night as if it had happened moments ago. She looked down at the ground again, trying to relax as he talked about music. When he mentioned the song, her gaze flew to his again. A small smile spread across her face and she looked down again. Actually, that is one of my favorite songs. Rather romantic. She said quietly. His next question surprised her, as she had never expected him to ask that. She looked up at him once more and smiled, nodding a bit. Of coarse. She said simply, unable to think of something to add on to that.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

James listened to her words and watched her reaction, she seemed very upset with what had happened to her about the bite. All he could do was extend the same courtesy she showed him and make no nervermind of it. But after he observed the single scar along her neck, his hand instinctively running his fingers along his own bite scar for a second. She had beautiful hair, the way it followed the motion in which her hand directed as it cascaded past her shoulder to reveal pale, silk-like skin. It was difficult to concentrate on the scar when he felt so covetous and the longing almost showed in his eyes.
He quickly snapped out of it and looked down at his arms, pushing up the sleeves as he stared at the inside of his right arm, there were no marks, no scratches, no scarring, nothing. James took in a slow deep breath as he abruptly stopped walking and stared at the ghostly white skin. It was just skin. He then lifted his shirt and looked at his stomach, gently touching the skin there as well. There was no burn scar, it was all gone. James marvelled at his body, it looked so different without the damage. He just about hugged Selena but forced himself to avoid an action like such. Instead he looked up at her with a smile on his face, though it wasn't big enough to show any teeth, there was a sparkle in his eye that showed he was very happy.
James finally looked down at the ground and politely replied, "I'm sorry you were bitten." Hoping she wouldn't bring up his moment of excitement. He'd recovered fairly quickly considering he'd just acted like a child on Christmas morning. This meant he could think less about the bad because he wouldn't be constantly reminded of it everytime he rolled up his sleeves.
His mood seemed to have altered after his little... episode and a small smile stuck to his face. "Do you really think it's possible for someone to love another human being with such conviction that they wish to be with them forever?" He asked, he knew she believed in love, it was obvious. His own opinion on love was a little different, he believed that everyone could love and be loved. Except for him. Sure, James knew he could love but the feelings were never going to be requieted and that was his problem.
"Thank you for all your help, Selena. You're very kind to me." James told her, and she was. Even if he didn't deserve it. "I hope there's some way of paying you back." He told her, knowing she would probably object to it but he'd still find a way to make it up to her.

Selena noticed James' eyes on her as she moved her hair back to reveal her scar. His hand flew to his own neck, probably fingering his new scar. As he listened to her, a strange look crossed his face and he instantly rolled up his sleeves and looked at his arms. He stopped walking and Selena paused as well. She watched him curiously, wondering what he could be thinking. Apparently he had had a lot of scars when he was human. She watched him lift up his shirt and stare at his stomach. She looked away quickly, kind of feeling like she was intruding upon something. Not that she hadn't liked what she had seen but....
He looked up at her and flashed her a genuine smile of happiness. She returned his smile with a small laugh and pulled her hands out of her pockets to cross over her chest. He looked down, and seemingly pulled himself together before apologizing for her being bit. She shrugged and mentally blocked out the memories that threatened to come. Don't worry about it. I've done a lot in my existence... helped so many. And now I can help you.
She didn't bother to add the part how she just hated how it had happened. She looked at him again and laughed out loud again. He was still smiling. "Do you really think it's possible for someone to love another human being with such conviction that they wish to be with them forever?" He asked her and her smile faded just a bit. Lord, was that a question! Her smile widened again as she nodded. Of coarse. True love. She responded with a shrug. That too brought memories back to the girl. She refused to acknowledge them, but merely looked at James. He thanked her again and complimented on her being so kind to him. "I hope there's some way of paying you back." He said and she knew she would have blushed if she could have. You're welcome... but please, don't worry about paying me back. She said with a shake of her head. She didn't want to mention that he had helped her as well. One, he gave her something to do. And two, he offered her a way to vent. She had never told anyone about her life, and being able to share it with someone was an amazing feeling. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

James listened to her laugh, he was still adjusting to these new senses. She was changing the posture of her arms again, but this time it was obviously not for nervous reasons. Her answer made him uncomfortable though, it would have been better if she had of killed him. He didn't deserve her help. James kept the smile on his face and let a hint of a hint of a chuckle out. "What's so funny?" He asked, a little confused but not very uncomfortable anymore.
James watched her reaction to his question, it was a big question and her answer was short. "True love? You mean that can't eat, can't sleep, reach for the stars, over the fence world series kinda stuff?" His biggest relationship with a girl had been as friends and the one time he was kissed by one, it had been a vampire about to turn him. There wasn't much of anything in the romance department for him.
James nodded at her words, he knew he could be an asset if he tried hard enough, but it also meant staying out of his own way sometimes and just listening to her. It was easy to do that, she was easy to listen to. "So tell me about Lucy." James asked, curious to know if she chose to surround herself with people like her or her opposites. He was definitely her opposite but he could certainly be very caring. "Are you like the most popular kid at school or what?" He continued, they were more questions about her, but he was genuinely honest about his interest with her.

Selena shook her head, laughing quietly. Just your reaction.
She said and let her arms drop. After she answered his question about love, she knew he didn't exactly have the same beliefs. "True love? You mean that can't eat, can't sleep, reach for the stars, over the fence world series kinda stuff?" He asked and Selena nodded. Yeah. It can happen. I've seen it before... Never happened to me though. It was sort of true. She had loved once, and thought it had been true love, but that love turned out to be her death. She wasn't about to go into that with James, though. She looked over at James just as he changed the topic and asked about Lucy. She smiled, thinking about her friend. Then he asked if she was the most popular kid at school and Selena started laughing. She couldn't help it, and she didn't want to hurt his feelings by laughing so she attempted to compose herself. No. I'm far from the most popular. I tend to avoid attention. I'm not sure how well my secret could be kept if I were popular. She answered first, still trying to think of a way to describe Lucy. And Lucy... well, she's something alright. She can be totally clueless, and she's really random. Hanging out with her is always interesting... we usually end up getting into trouble. She laughed again at a few memories that came floating back to her. Like this one time, we were having a sleepover (well, for her at least) and we ended up sneaking out and running to her ex-boyfriends house and we toilet papered it. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

James gently scratched the back of his neck, he wished to blush but felt none of the prevailing events that came with the autonomic reflex. His mind instantely began questioning how the laws of the universe applied to vampires but he quickly removed the quesions as she spoke again. "Seen it before? You mean between humans? Or in movies?" There was of course a difference but most of it was sarcasm. Selena was an intelligent woman and he perceived her as such. "You mean to say you've been alive for a thousand years and never once fathomed to spend your whole life with a person?" James smiled, it was a curious case but if fate played a role in this, it almost made sense. If vampires could live forever then there was all she had to do was wait. He also guessed it had something to do with the distance she put between herself and the rest of the world.
James looked at the ground and laughed, she'd answered the question before it had escaped her lips. And to know that the worst she'd ever done was in a sense to T.P. some fellows house over broken hearts and promises. Deep down, Selena was still very innocent. James swallowed again, he just wanted to talk her ear off and tell her everything he knew about anything. Including his past and his opinions of her. "I'd love to meet Lucy one day. She sounds like quite the character." James told her. He allowed a smile to drift along his lips as he observed her house. "When we get inside... may I borrow your shower?" James asked, politely as he could.

Selena looked up at James and smiled. Between two people. Long ago. A love like that is hard to come by.
She said. But his next question threw her off guard. She knew the answer, but she was afraid it might sound a bit cheesy. Oh well. He asked, so why not tell? She looked out at her house, admiring it. Oh, I've thought about it. But a person like me doesn't deserve a love like that. I mean, I've lived for a thousand years... not everyone can do that. For the most part, people don't really want to die, but we all know it's inevitable. I can't die. Not in a natural human way at least. I figure, because I can do that, I can live without a mate... no matter how much I would like one. She looked up at James and smiled when he said he would like to meet Lucy one day. Well one day I'll introduce you to her. She couldn't help but wonder what her best friend would think about James. Selena wasn't really one for guys, and Lucy knew that. "When we get inside... may I borrow your shower?" He asked and Selena nodded absent-mindedly. It took her a minute before his words sank in and she blinked. Oh. Yeah, of coarse. As they got closer to the house, Selena could see she had accidentally left the door open. Oops. She said quietly, glad it was a warm night in the usually rainy town. Not that it would matter anyway. [/blockquote][/blockquote]

"Your were born near the romance era if I've done my math right. A thousand years changes alot. I don't expect you to ever find that love. It was hard to come by then and now it's only harder." James told her. He spoke like a bitter, octagenarian man. Always finding the worst in anything he discussed. "Why don't you just find a mate in your own race?" James then allowed his words to become unfiltered and he told her exactly what he thought.
"I've been screwed over so badly and I've screwed up so badly. Nothing you could have done could compare to my mistakes but just over this last little while I can tell that your favorite flower would be a single red rose and you probably watch everyone around you dating and happy and you're frozen in this dimension of immortality. It doesn't really matter who you are or will be. What matters is what you think and what's inside of you... And besides, you sound like a nun or something." James said, he didn't want her to know that deep down, he believeed that there was hope for everyone to be happy. "You know, I'm not a very great mate or anything but it's certainly not a bad idea to have me as your friend." James offered to her. Hod idea of friendship could be compared to stars, you might not always see them but you know they're always there.
He silently comtemplated what Lucy would be like. A girl like Selena would probably have a very wise but wild best friend. He continually found himself wishing to know more about Selena. James knew she wouldn't push him into anything he didn't want to do and she had a very caring heart. "Thank you." James told her for the millionth time that night. He smirked slightly when he saw the door open. "The last time I left a door open, a 'ccoon got into the house and I had to chase it out with a broom. Not to mention it ate my dinner."James told her as he allowed her to walk inside first. It was the polite thing to do and he had been taught appropriate manners. "Ladies first."

Selena found herself shrugging at his question. Because I haven't met any male vampires that are like me. I couldn't possibly be happy with one who lives on human blood.
As James went on, Selena looked up at him with a smile. He had a way of making her feel better, and she couldn't deny that he had a point. And besides, you sound like a nun or something. Selena laughed, admitting that it was true, she did kind of sound like a nun. "You know, I'm not a very great mate or anything but it's certainly not a bad idea to have me as your friend." James said and Selena blinked. It wasn't what she expected him to say at all, but she had an impulse to hug him for some reason. Instead, she smiled. Thanks. She mumbled, unable to think of anything else to say. They got up to her house and she tested the air, just in case someone had been there. Nope. The most recent scent there was her and James. He mentioned that one time a raccoon got into his house and ate his dinner and Selena grinned. Oh that sounds fun. He stopped right by the door, and Selena took it as an invitation to walk in first. She smiled as she passed him, a little shocked. Not many males were that polite these days. She walked to the living room and turned to face the door. Did you want to take a shower now? She asked him.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

"You could always marry a human and turn them. I mean, the right guy would think the sun shines out of your ass no matter what you do on a date." James explained. He was pretty sure the last was a quote from Juno, but it certainly was right on the money. He watched her look up on him and smile, it was a gorgeous smile. It made her eyes light up and would definitely light up a room. He looked away when he realized he was consciously thinking these thoughts. His ears even picked up the laugh after he'd finished his speel about love. He couldn't help but look back up at her as a strange look seemed to come across her face and she thanked him. He did not say you're welcome, seeing no point in the words, but gave a bit of a smile.
"You've never had a raccoon in your house if you think that was fun. Maybe one day I'll go find one just so you can come home and deal with it." James teased. He couldn't ever imagine himself bringing home a raccoon to play a joke on someone with. It was almost cruel for both the animal and the intended victim.
James waited until Selena walked in before following her, lightly closing the door behind himself, carefully. He was one of those people who tried to be careful with just about anything that wasn't his. "If you don't mind." He answered her question. "I'm not sure where it is, though. Haven't been here that often." James explained with a shrug. There seemed to be more light in the house then outside but eventually night would be at odds with morning and it really wouldn't matter. "If you live forever and you don't have anyone to love, what have you lived for all these years?" James asked. The question had been bothering him. If he lived forever what would he have to live for? Most things seemed superfluous to him. Few things had value even when he was human and now he wasn't. There were certainly ups and downs to this whole vampire thing. He thought about the word and the meaning in his head. Everything seemed so complicated as of late.

Selena allowed a smile when James suggested just turning a human. She had definately entertained the idea before, but never thought she could do it. She wouldn't want this life for anyone else, and she wouldn't turn a human on purpose. Unless of coarse she really did love them. But that hadn't happened yet. She laughed when he told her he would have to go and find one someday so she could deal with it. She looked up at him and made a face.
I was being sarcastic... and if you ever did that to me, I would just have to kill the raccoon and then have you clean up the mess.
She teased. As she turned to face James after she walked inside, she watched him close the door carefully and nodded when he said he would use the shower. She started walking towards the staircase to show him where the bathroom was, but stopped when he asked her a question. She turned around to look at him and shrugged. I'm not suicidal I guess. Of coarse it was a bit of a joke, but it was true. Other than that, Selena had never really thought about that. She just always went through life, feeding on animals and going to school. Her life hadn't been too exciting after the year 1700. She could have gone too see the Volturi, asked them to take her life. Or asked to join their coven. She had the ability to heal, so she could have been of some use to them. Selena realized after a moment that she was just standing there, zoning out, so she spun around again and started up the stairs. Well, come on. The bathroom's up here. When she reached the top of the stairs, she walked down the hallway and stopped at a closet at the end near the bathroom and grabbed a towel and some soap. Alright, She said, walking into the bathroom, here's your stuff, you can take as long as you want, I'll be downstairs. She flashed James a quick smile before she retreated out of the bathroom and down the stairs. She needed to take a minute anyway. Selena ended up at the kitchen table, looking at some homework that had been assigned the day before. She had nothing better to do, so she opened her algebra book and started on the equations while she waited for James to finish his shower.[/blockquote][/blockquote]

James could clearly tell she'd preciously contemplated the idea of such and act but why do the dirty work yourself when there were other, wilder, more dangerous vampires out there. So far, this whole vampire thing wasn't so bad, it wasn't as bad as living with his dad, which made it alright and bearable. He didn't see what the big deal was with humans, it was like he could slow down a notch and just enjoy life the way it was meant to be. Maybe even go fishing a few times and stop rushing, even though now he could rush faster, though he was pretty sure he couldn't think faster than he currently did. It still changed a lot. "What makes you think I'd clean it up?" James mumbled with a smirk, just barely loud enough for her to make out his words. Of course, he'd do it if she asked him sweetly. He was a sucker for a damsel in distress. Selena turned to face him and he listened to her words. That makes one of us. "A thousand years is a bit of a long time, don't you think? Haven't you ever just had a day where you wonder why you wake up in the morning or something? You know, shouldn't there be a purpose in life? I think you're hiding from something or something." James said, voicing his opinion, he knew he was screwed up, he had no problem admitting it but then again, he had no problem with understanding who he was, maybe with his past, but he just needed to find a way to deal with it and sometimes he even fet comfortable in his own skin. James watched for a while as he felt a looming silence as she thought about it, he himself was thinking but her presence was always lingering in his mind and he stared at a spot on a wall, waiting for her to travel up the steps and t solitude and cold water. James followed her up the steps; he stared at the wood eh climbed up. There were other places his eyes could be from back there. James received the towel in his fingers with a slight thank you and then was led to the bathroom where he was left with a smile before Selena ran down the stairs. The silence after she had gone was comfortable and James turned around and closed the door, not really bothering to lock it, she wasn't stupid enough to open the door on him when she had been the one to hand him a towel and soap. He quickly removed his hoodie, shirt and pants, turning on the hot water as he stopped to stare at his body in the mirror. Did he really look like this or had he hit his head and was now in hospital dreaming of how he looked and who he was near. He finally slipped under the water, expecting it to be far colder than it was, but it didn’t bother him, he was just glad he was being hit by the harsh water of a shower and could think of everything, though thinking wasn’t that interesting. James’ lips formed the letters of one of his favourite old songs, his slow romantic words carried and he didn’t even care if Selena heard his voice as he spoke the words. The song was a great song called the Nearness of You. He’d first heard the version by Norah Jones then once again by Frank Sinatra and loved the slow gentle melody. James ran the soap across his body and after an hour or so of wondering and thinking; he stepped out of the shower and began drying his body. He slowly slipped his jeans back on and finally threw his shirt over his head and stuck his arms through the holes, deciding to leave his baggy hoodie off, the black shirt he wore had some dumb thing written on it and seemed like a typical male shirt, but it surprisingly clung to his body, possibly because it was wet and possibly because it was designed like that. James’ hair though, still held the molecules of water and he simply ran his fingers through it and then shook it out to allow it to naturally stand up on end, almost like a gel would. James quietly walked downstairs and looked for Selena, quietly whispering, “Hey,” with a bit of a smile.

Selena had not the patience to do her algebra homework, so just after the first two problems, she slammed the book shut. She stood and paced the kitchen for a few minutes and then paused by the sink as she heard Jame's voice quietly drift down to her ears. It seemed as if he was singing or something. She couldn't exactly make out all the words, but she felt like she was eavesdropping anyway so she went to sit back down at the table.
She planted her elbows on the hard wood and let her face drop into her upturned hands. While she waited, a song jumped to her mind and she began humming the melody. Right Here Waiting by Richard Marx. After a few lines she gave up humming and began singing quietly. She had always loved the song, and she hadn't heard it in quite a while. Selena eventually found herself totally engrossed in the song, and didn't even notice James until he whispered a quiet "Hey."
Selena's head shot up and her face lit up with a dazzling smile, which quickly faded. She knew that if she had been human, she would have a deep blush across her cheeks. She didn't sing anymore. And James had most likely heard her. She stood slowly and faced him, her smile returning. "Oh, hey!" She grabbed a loose strand of her dark hair and twirled it around her finger, just smiling up at him.

James looked up at her, water still held in his hair but his body was almost already dry and he gave her a slight smile. He was sad and scared of this whole thing and deep down; he wasn’t letting it really sink in. He looked up at Selena, “you have a beautiful voice.” He told her. James held the towel in his hands and looked up into her eyes, down at the floor and back at her again. “I love music because it’s the only language in which you cannot say a mean or hateful thing.” James watched as she twirled her hair in her fingers and couldn’t help but look. He wasn’t sure what it was a sign of but it was pretty. Unfortunately, he didn’t have the confidence to tell her he thought she was one of the most beautiful people he’d ever met.
Walking over towards the kitchen table, he sat down across from her and smiled. He kind of wanted to tell her all the things he thought she needed to know but couldn’t explain just what they were. He didn’t know how to bring them up either. “You know, you never answered my question. How come you’ve been around all these years, by yourself with almost no purpose in life, and for what? So you could raise me? There has to be something else. I mean, haven’t you ever wanted to tell Lucy?” He asked, it was a very straight forward question and he stared at her book, reading the title as he spoke.
Algebra was an easy subject, just like anything else math-wise. It was just simplicity. It was black and white, you were wrong or you were right and there was no in between whatsoever, no grey area. He ran his fingers through his hair out of habit and placed his arms on the table interlacing his fingers and hunching over a bit. He was usually only hunched over when he was comfortable enough not to sit completely straight up. “And before Lucy… were there other best friends who you just watched grow up?”
